Employment FAQs

  • Chevron down How old must you be to work at ScareHouse?
  • You must be 18 years old or older before September 30th, 2018 to work at ScareHouse.

  • Chevron down Will I be paid?
  • All positions are paid. We do not have any volunteer positions.

  • Chevron down I've completed the registration document, what happens next?
  • After you complete the document, you just need to show up for one of the audition/interview time slots. You will not receive an email or call until after a hiring decision is made. Audition and interview time slots can be found here.

  • Chevron down What happens at auditions?
  • Actors will be interviewed and asked to perform some acting exercises. You do NOT need to have acting experience to apply for the actor position. Makeup artists and customer service agents will be interviewed. Everyone will be asked to fill out an availability calendar. Auditions and interviews are first come, first served. See job specific FAQs below for more information. We’re looking for hard workers with good attitudes.

  • Chevron down Can I take public transportation if I work at ScareHouse?
  • Buses do not run late at night when employees are dismissed. Reliable transportation is recommended.

  • Chevron down What should I wear to auditions/interviews?
  • Wear something comfortable that you’re able to move in. The building will most likely be warm, please dress accordingly.

  • Chevron down When do I show up?
  • Auditions and interviews dates and times. You do not need to sign up for a specific date or time:
    – Friday, August 10th from 6-9PM
    – Saturday, August 11th from 6-9PM
    – Friday, August 17th from 6-9PM
    – Saturday, August 18th from 6-9PM
    The ScareHouse is located at 118 Locust Street in Etna, PA, There will be signage pointing to the correct entrance.
  • Chevron down What do I bring to an Audition/Interview Event?
  • You only need to bring yourself! If you are applying to be an actor, you will be interviewed and then asked to take part in a scaring activity. There is no need to dress formally, just comfortably. It will likely be warm in the building, so dress appropriately. If you are a makeup artist, please bring your printed or digital portfolio.

  • Chevron down Where do I park?
  • We recommend finding parking on Butler Street, which is free after 5:00. If you choose to seek parking in the residential area surrounding the building, please note the color of the lines. White lines are public parking, orange lines are permit parking only after a certain time and that time varies from street to street.

  • Chevron down Will ScareHouse conduct a background check if I am considered for employment?
  • Yes.

Actor Specific FAQs

  • Chevron down Do I need acting experience to act in the ScareHouse?
  • No, you do not need to have acting experience, but a good attitude is a must.

  • Chevron down Do I need to provide my own costume?
  • No. All you need are black clothes, black shoes, and enthusiasm.

  • Chevron down Will I have to wear a mask and/or makeup?
  • You will most likely have to wear a mask or makeup. There are very few positions that require neither.

  • Chevron down What if I have known makeup allergies?
  • We have special makeup available for those with makeup allergies.

  • Chevron down Can I choose my spot or character?
  • We will choose a role for you.

  • Chevron down What is the most fun part of working at a haunted attraction?
    • Getting paid to scare people
    • Meeting like-minded individuals
    • Overcoming your own fears
    • Learning the art of scaring
    • Becoming another person (or creature)
  • Chevron down What is the least fun part of working at a haunted attraction?
    • Strenuous and repetitive activity
    • Pittsburgh weather. Can be hot the first weeks and cold in the later weeks
  • Chevron down Should I prepare a monologue or bring headshots?
  • You do not need to bring a monologue or headshots.

The Basement Actors FAQ

  • Chevron down Do I need any special skills to work in The Basement?
  • Improv skills are preferred, but not required.

  • Chevron down Is there anything else I should be prepared for to work in The Basement?
  • Must be comfortable being in close proximity to customers. 

Makeup Artist FAQs

  • Chevron down What should I include in my portfolio?
  • Show us a well-rounded portfolio of your skills. Please include photos of any/all of the following: Gore/special FX, beauty makeup, theatrical, film makeup, airbrushing, molds/life casts, face painting, drawings & even props you have made.

  • Chevron down Does my portfolio need to be printed?
  • No. However please have all of your photos organized into a PowerPoint or similar document if you chose not to have a printed portfolio.

Customer Service Agent

  • Chevron down What kind of previous work experience should I have?
  • Customer service experience in any area is preferred, but not required. A good attitude is a must. You will most likely be working outside.

  • Chevron down What kind of qualities are you looking for in an applicant?
  • Patience and people skills are important since you’ll be working with the public.

Security Team Member

  • Chevron down What does the job entail?
  • General duties of the Security Team Members are to proactively observe, report, and respond to security threats in the assigned position, while monitoring radio activity during operational nights at ScareHouse. The Security Team Members must remain alert and prepared to respond to and mitigate threats. Nightly assignments could require sitting, standing or patrolling for long periods of time. May also require monitoring camera feeds or outdoor shifts.

  • Chevron down What kind of previous work experiences should I have?
  • Previous security, theater or haunted attraction experience and Emergency Medical Response (CPR/AED/First Aid) experience is a plus, but not necessary.

  • Chevron down What kind of qualities are you looking for in an applicant?
  • The ideal candidate will be safety minded, a team player and possess great communication and customer service skills.
